Khum Khun Phaen

After visiting the ancient palace and paying respect to the Buddha image at Wat Mongkhon Bophit, another nearby site that should not be missed is the Khum Khun Phaen. It is a good historical example of the Central Thai-style houses for wealthy families that are rarely found today. The architecture reflects local knowledge in building a home that suited the environment and weather with a focus on functionality.

The Khum Khun Phaen comprises of 5 houses. The largest house to the West is called “Ho Yai”. The South side house is named “Ho Kwa”, the North side building is called “Ho Sai”, while the middle house is called “Ho Klang”. At the front is a small house called “Ho Na” or “Ho Nang”. Each house is connected via a walkway. The original owner was Major General Krom Khun Marupong Siriphat, the former governor-general of the Old Capital precinct. It was in 1894 that he ordered these houses built to serve as his residence. They were originally located on Ko Loi near Saphan Kluea, the Salt Bridge, across from the Office of the Old Capital in the Hua Ro sub-district. It was not until 1940 that Mr. Pridi Banomyong had the residence moved to its current location and later had additional houses constructed. The residence was named after a well-known piece of Thai literature, “Khun Chang Khun Phaen”, in order to go along with the story line that Khun Phaen (one of the leading male characters) once lived in Ayutthaya.

The house was built on stilts to avoid flooding during the monsoon season. During other times of the year, the space below the house is used for a variety of purposes; such as, relaxing in the shade or storing agricultural equipment. The high, pointed roof helps drain off the heat and lets the rain flow off easily.

A visit to Khum Khun Phaen will not only impart relaxation, but some interesting knowledge before journeying onto other sites around Ko Mueang.
